Many fans of White Wolf’s World of Darkness were excited when Werewolf: The Apocalypse game was revealed as the first full-length video game, which takes place in this setting since the classic cult Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. So, what do we know about the upcoming Werewolf game so far? When will be Werewolf: The Apocalypse release date?
Werewolf is being developed by Cyanide Studio and will be released by Focus Home Interactive. If you’re not familiar with this French developer, their most famous recent title was the new game Call of Cthulhu.
Werewolf: The Apocalypse Release Date and Platforms
The game was initially supposed to be released in 2018, but this has not happened. No official release date has been announced, and since we haven’t seen anything but concept art yet, it would be safe to assume that it’ll be a while before we see any trailers or gameplay footage.
If we had to guess, 2021 would be a reasonable target, but we need to wait to see if progress is made.
Also, the game will be available on the Mac, and “consoles” will also be listed as platforms on the official site. We should view this as referring to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, possibly even their respective predecessors, which are now on the horizon.
Werewolf: The Apocalypse Story
Environmentalism is one of the most popular topics in Werewolf: the Apocalypse, and it seems like it will be the focal point of the video game adaptation storyline.
The game will put us in the shoes of the Fianna tribe Garou called Cahal and set us up against the underground Pantex organization (run by vampires) that is destroying the natural world by every-hungry business machine. Cahal will have to resolve the challenges raised by this party, while at the same time uncovering the fate of his missing son.
Character development will be minimal as the tribe, history, name, and gender are all already chosen for us. It is unclear to what degree, if at all, the player will be able to modify the appearance of Cahal.
Not much we know about the plot other than the above basics, and while certain moral grey areas are expected to be dealt with, Werewolf: The Apocalypse has always concentrated more on battle than on suspense and mystery, unlike Vampire: The Masquerade. Speaking of war …
Werewolf: The Apocalypse Gameplay
As already stated, we have yet to see any gameplay footage. But the developers have been pretty explicit about what the war in WTA is going to look like.
The player will be able to take three forms: Homid, Lupus, and Crinos. Unfortunately, Glabro and Hispo don’t seem to be in the mix. But that’s possible because there’s no way to integrate these types into the mechanics meaningfully.
The human form, Homid, will be used to blend with humans and allow players to achieve their target through social interaction and non-violent means. In the meantime, Lupus – the wolf form – will let a stealthy approach. Complete with the advanced senses of a predatory canine that make it ideal for exploration.
Then there’s the iconic half-man, half-wolf shape – Crinos, also known as the War Shape. This is going to be a combat-oriented style. That transforms Garou into a raging death machine capable of ripping enemies apart with huge claws and healing wounds much faster than is usually possible.
Nonetheless, the developers don’t want the player to get too bloodthirsty, as is evident from the ‘rage’ mechanic. Namely, witnessing such incidents and being subjected to violence will continually fill up Cahal’s anger meter, which will have to be carefully controlled and expended so that you do not risk your character going into a violent rampage. That has the potential to have a lasting effect on the game world. What’s more, it might have cost Cahal his life, resulting in an instant game over because Wyrm compromised him.
Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Our Expectations
So – it’s the first actual World of Darkness game since 2004. The excitement is intense, and the developers are taking their time to produce a decent product. So that we can expect nothing short of a great game, right?
Yeah, frankly, it’d be best to keep our thoughts in order. Though all we know about the game so far sounds good and dandy on paper. I can’t help but feel a little cynical about Cyanide Studio’s track record.
As described in the introduction, the most recent game to be produced by this studio was Call of Cthulhu. This is a highly anticipated game that ended up being painfully average, both in the eyes of critics and fans. Their older releases were hardly any better.
In the end, while I don’t want to be a pessimist. I can’t help but believe that Werewolf: The Apocalypse will be yet another entry in a series of unremarkable games played by Cyanide. Here’s hoping that isn’t going to be the case.
